What Is a Computer?
Hardware and software before anyone says AI
What is a computer? (Simple Explanation)
A computer is a machine that works with information. It can take information in. It can keep it. It can change it. It can show it. It can send it.
NIST uses a formal name for this kind of equipment: information technology. The glossary is long. The idea is not. A computer is equipment used with data or information.
A computer has two kinds of parts.
Hardware is the physical part. You can touch it. The case. The screen. The board inside. The chips. NIST defines hardware as the physical components of an information system.
Software is the programs, plus the documents that go with them. You cannot hold software the way you hold a chip. NIST defines software as computer programs and associated documentation.
The machine does not think. It follows instructions. Hardware does the physical work. Software tells the hardware what to do.
You do not need every part name on day one. You need three names: the hardware, the software, and the information that goes in and comes out.
Why this comes first
People often start with "What is AI?" That question is next. AI systems run on computers. If you skip the computer, the later words float.
This page stays with the machine. No model yet. No training yet.
What a computer is not
A computer is not a person. It is not a mind. It is equipment plus programs. Treat those as separate facts. Hardware can exist with no useful software loaded. Software does nothing without hardware to run it.
Key Ideas
Information technology: equipment used to get, keep, change, move, or show data or information. Source: NIST.
Hardware: the physical components of an information system. Source: NIST.
Software: computer programs and associated documentation. Source: NIST.
Name the parts: hardware, software, and the information that goes in and comes out.
Next question
The physical parts include chips. Chips need power. Power can become heat. What does that mean in practice?
