Sensors and data (Simple Explanation)
A computer can work only with information it has. Some of that information starts in the physical world. A sensor is one way in.
NIST's CSRC glossary describes a sensor as a device that generates a voltage or current representative of a physical property being measured.
A related word is transducer. NIST's Intelligent Systems Division, using IEEE 1451 language, describes a transducer as converting a physical, biological, or chemical quantity into an electrical signal.
The electrical signal is not the event itself. A number in a file is not the whole room. A short sound sample is not the whole hour. Data is a limited record. That last sentence is a teaching claim. It is qualified. The glossaries define the device. They do not say "data equals the world." Treat data as a record with limits.
This page does not tell you which camera to buy. It tells you what a sensor claim is: a physical property, turned into an electrical signal, then stored as data.
